Srinagar, Jun 10 (KNO): Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limited (MEIL), Harpal Singh, on Wednesday said the strategically important Zojila Tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh, significantly boost tourism and economic activity, and is expected to be opened for traffic by the end of 2028.
Speaking with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) Singh said the project will end the recurring disruption caused by the seasonal closure of the Zojila Pass.
“Every year, traffic on the Zojila Pass remains suspended for nearly four to five months due to heavy snowfall and adverse weather conditions. Once the tunnel becomes operational, Ladakh will have uninterrupted road connectivity throughout the year,” he said.
The officer said the tunnel would also enhance road safety by reducing accidents on the treacherous mountain pass. “Even when the pass remains open, and weather conditions are favourable, around 50 to 60 accidents are reported annually, resulting in significant loss of lives. The tunnel will provide a safer and more reliable route for commuters,” he added.
Highlighting the economic benefits of the project, Singh said improved connectivity would give a major boost to tourism and trade in both Kashmir and Ladakh. “The project will have a positive impact on the local economy. Increased tourist inflow will create more opportunities for taxi operators, hoteliers, shopkeepers and other stakeholders associated with the tourism sector,” he said.
Referring to the breakthrough achieved on Monday, the COO termed it a major milestone in the execution of the project but noted that substantial work still remains.
“Today’s breakthrough marks an important achievement. However, it will take another two-and-a-half years to complete the remaining works. The construction process will continue through 2027 and 2028, and traffic is expected to start moving through the tunnel by the end of 2028,” he said—(KNO)
